Volunteer Program
Be a part of the WRC Team
Students of all genders are welcome to volunteer at the WRC. Scheduled, for-credit office shifts and mentoring opportunities are available every term, and committees for special events and projects are assembled throughout the year.
We seek to support our volunteers in identifying, honing, and developing their individual leadership skills by providing opportunities to work in a collaborative and supportive environment.
Volunteers can sign up to:
Coordinate one of the WRC's large yearly events (Vagina Monologues, Take Back the Night, etc.)
-
Apply for a WRC Internship (requires a 5-8hr/week commitment for the academic year)
Take on an office shift to help us keep the office open and connect students to resources
Write for the WRC's online newsmagazine, The She Sheet
Help out the day of an event
Work with a WRC staff member to coordinate a special project

WRC Fall Volunteer Opportunities
International Women's Day General Interest Meeting - October 6
The kick-off meeting of the PIWD '09 Planning Committee will take place Monday, October 6, in the Broadway building Starbucks from 6:00-7:00pm. At this particular meeting we'll discuss the various committee roles available, what type of festival we're going to be planning, what the meeting schedule will look like and, most importantly, committee member recruitment.
If you are a confirmed committee member or an interested potential committee member, please meet us at the Starbucks on the first floor of the Broadway building at 625 SW Jackson, on Monday, October 6, at 6:00pm. For more information, contact PIWD Lead Coordinator Katie Cagle at coordinator@piwd.org.
More About Volunteering
The WRC takes on new volunteers every quarter, with all volunteers attending a group orientation the first Friday of the quarter.
Students make a commitment of at least four hours a week for the whole term. Students who cannot commit to a whole quarter should watch our listserv for short-term opportunities to volunteer with the WRC.
Prospective volunteers should email Zena Piccolo, our Interim Volunteer Coordinator, at zena@pdx.edu for more information.
Leadership Development
The Women's Resource Center is committed to supporting our volunteers as they develop skills enhancing their ability to become leaders for social change. To that end, all of our volunteers set learning goals using the Social Change Model of Leadership Development by the Higher Education Institute, UCLA. For more information about the Social Change Model, we have provided the following documents:
- A PowerPoint presentation explaining the Social Change Model of Leadership Development (free viewer available here),
- An excerpt (requires Adobe Acrobat) from "A Social Change Model of Leadership Development Guidebook" by the Higher Education Research Institute (1996)
